Donald Trump’s recent comments about NATO have not merely strained transatlantic relations — they have actively insulted the memory of thousands of soldiers who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with American forces in Afghanistan.

In an interview with Fox News on 22 January 2026, Trump said of NATO allies: 

"We’ve never needed them... They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan… and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines."

He also questioned whether the alliance would support the United States if asked, and repeated his broader claim that NATO is “overrated”.

Across Europe and beyond, the reaction was immediate and unequivocal.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump’s remarks “insulting and frankly appalling”, emphasising the hurt they caused loved ones of those killed or injured under a mission launched after the September 11, 2001 attacks — during which NATO’s Article 5 was invoked for the first and only time in the alliance’s history. Starmer said that if such comments had come from him, “I would certainly apologise”.

In the United Kingdom, where 457 service personnel died in Afghanistan, the insult cuts particularly deep. Families of the fallen expressed raw distress. Lucy Aldridge, whose 18-year-old son was killed in a 2009 bomb blast, told British media that Trump’s comments were “deeply disgusting” and deeply hurtful.

The backlash was not limited to politicians. Prince Harry, a veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan, issued a forceful rebuttal, underscoring the sacrifices made by British troops and others under NATO’s collective defence commitment: “I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there.” His statement highlighted that allied nations answered the call after 9/11, with families forever changed by loss and trauma.

Veterans and serving personnel were equally forthright. Former head of the British Army Lord Richard Dannatt called Trump’s comments “outrageous” and “factually incorrect”, saying they disrespect the nation’s armed forces and the families of those who died. Similar outrage was voiced by European veterans and defence figures, who pointed to the thousands of NATO members who fought alongside Americans in Afghanistan.

Finnish, Polish, Danish and Canadian leaders also reminded international audiences of their countries’ sacrifices: over 150 Canadians, 90 French soldiers, 44 Danes and countless others who served and died in the Afghan theatre.

Trump’s framing does more than misdescribe history; it undermines the very foundation of NATO, whose founding treaty enshrines collective defence. The alliance’s Article 5 — a mutual-aid pledge that an attack on one is an attack on all — was triggered after 9/11, prompting NATO members to deploy in support of the United States.

To dismiss that as “staying a little off the front lines” is not merely inaccurate — it is an erasure of shared sacrifice and mutual commitment. It also glosses over the fact that NATO forces operated in some of Afghanistan’s most dangerous provinces, from Helmand to Kandahar, in firefights that claimed lives and limbs alike.

Enter the elephant in the room: Trump’s own record

Part of Trump’s appeal to his base has long been a self-fashioned image of toughness. But when it comes to military service, the reality is quite different.

Trump avoided service in the Vietnam War draft on 

 separate occasions, most famously excusing himself on the basis of “bone spurs” — a condition widely mocked as a form of draft dodging. His critics quickly seized on that history in response to his NATO comments, asking how someone who sidestepped service can assess the sacrifices of those who did not.

There is no suggestion that draft deferment disqualifies someone from leadership. But when a president minimises the contributions of allied soldiers who actually faced combat, the contrast with Trump’s own service history becomes striking.

Transatlantic relations and what comes next

The White House, when pressed, doubled down. Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers provided a statement reading defended Trump’s statements by saying the United States “has done more for NATO than any other country in the alliance combined”.

That argument will ring hollow for many families who lost loved ones under NATO command, for communities who mourn the dead and support the wounded, and for the allied troops who fought in theatres from Afghanistan to the Balkans.

The Trump remarks have not just irritated allies; they have deepened a sense of transatlantic mistrust at a time when the alliance is again under pressure from geopolitical threats and internal divisions. To dismiss decades of allied cooperation as “never really needed” risks not only diplomatic fallout, but also a profound offence to the spirit in which NATO was forged: shared security, shared sacrifice, and shared history.

If Trump wants to “test” NATO’s resolve — as he has suggested in other contexts — he might begin by acknowledging the truth of its past, rather than rewriting it for political convenience.

For a man who never served, never bled, and never stood beside anyone in uniform, Donald Trump’s contempt for those who did is not just offensive — it is grotesque, and final proof that his idea of strength has always been posturing, not earned.
