Nepal’s political order did not crumble in slow motion; it collapsed all at once. In early September 2025, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government abruptly blocked 26 major social-media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, WhatsApp and Discord. The official justification was that the companies had failed to “register” with Nepali authorities, but no one under 30 believed that. For Nepal’s young majority, the blackout felt like an attempt to suffocate public outrage before it turned into something unmanageable. The ban triggered immediate protest calls on VPN-protected channels and encrypted groups, and the tone was unmistakable: this time, young Nepalis were not backing down.

Frustration had been building for months. The government’s perceived indifference crystallised days before the social media ban, when a provincial minister’s convoy struck an 11-year-old girl and fled. When asked, then-Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli waved away the hit-and-run incident as “normal”, a remark that went viral before the blackout and hardened the sense that Nepal’s political class had become insulated from reality.

On 8 September, Kathmandu filled with an extraordinary mix: teenagers in school uniforms, university students carrying banners, and young professionals who had taken emergency leave from work. The Hami Nepal movement, which had grown quickly online through Discord and Instagram, used VPN-routed channels to coordinate meeting points and avoid police lines. What happened next unfolded in hours and then reverberated for years. Protesters surged toward the parliamentary compound; police escalated from tear gas to water cannon, then to rubber bullets, and finally to live ammunition. The anger detonated on 9 September. What began as grief turned into a nationwide assault on a political system many believed had failed them. Singha Durbar, the Prime Minister’s Office, was set ablaze by a furious crowd. The Ministries of Home, Finance, and Health also caught fire. Parliament burned next. The Supreme Court and the anti-corruption commission were attacked. A former prime minister’s home and the residence of the sitting foreign minister were torched. From Pokhara to Biratnagar, provincial assemblies, tax offices and police posts fell to the unrest. Hospitals issued public calls for blood, while residents across Kathmandu documented the infernos in real time. By nightfall, more than 70 people were reported dead.

The army imposed a curfew at midnight on 9 September. The following morning, Oli resigned and reportedly fled the capital by helicopter after brief tracking on open-source flight sites. President Ramchandra Paudel lifted the social-media ban and dissolved parliament, announcing elections for March 2026. The trouble was: Nepal had no interim government. The parties were discredited; the streets held political legitimacy; and the youth movement controlling the narrative had no intention of allowing the old guard to negotiate behind closed doors.

The solution emerged from an unlikely place: a Discord server originally created to coordinate anti-corruption protests. “Youths Against Corruption” had already been a hive of memes, organising tips, livestreams and grassroots strategy sessions. But after the blackout lifted, it instantly became Nepal’s largest civic forum. Membership surged into the tens of thousands within hours. At peak during the crisis, moderators estimated more than 140,000 users active across multiple channels. Young Nepalis abroad joined through VPNs, often staying up all night to contribute.

The server transformed into a sprawling deliberative space. Moderators created dedicated sections for constitutional questions, candidate proposals, emergency relief coordination, and misinformation rebuttals. Rumours spread constantly — such as claims that foreign governments were backing one candidate or that certain youth leaders were agents of political parties — and were debunked with documents and evidence in real time, as thousands debated what an interim prime minister is actually allowed to do under the constitution.

The 73-year-old former Chief Justice logged into a voice channel packed with thousands of young people. For nearly an hour, she answered questions on transitional justice, police reform, economic recovery, and protecting protesters’ rights. Screenshots of her username in the channel — flanked by stunned messages from participants — spread instantly across Nepali social media. It was one of the most unusual political encounters in modern South Asia: a respected elder speaking directly to a generation that had just torched the regime she sought to stabilise.

Later that evening, the moderators launched a server-wide poll. By the time voting closed, 7,586 young Nepalis had cast ballots — a tiny fraction of the country, but an extraordinary number for a self-organised, anonymous online referendum in the middle of a national blackout. The constitutional barrier — former Chief Justices are barred from becoming PM — was overcome by invoking the “doctrine of necessity,” a rarely used emergency principle that allows extra-constitutional decisions during national collapse.

On 12 September 2025, Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s first female prime minister. Standing before a country still smelling faintly of smoke, she acknowledged the surreal nature of her rise. “My name was brought from the streets,” she said, promising to hold office no longer than six months and to deliver a free, fair vote. Amnesty International welcomed the lifting of the social-media ban and urged systemic reforms. Think-tanks across Asia and Europe scrambled to analyse what had happened: a digitally organised youth movement had not only toppled a government but filled the vacuum with its own self-legitimised process. Whether Nepal’s Discord-driven interim government becomes a blueprint or a cautionary tale is still debated. The digital divide remains real; urban youths dominated the vote; and questions linger about security, verification, and representation. But even critics concede one thing: in the absence of functioning institutions, Nepal’s young citizens built their own — fast, improvised, imperfect, yet undeniably powerful.
