Nigel Farage has been unusually busy over the past few weeks, standing alongside three recent Conservative defectors — two sitting MPs and one prominent former cabinet minister — now presented by Reform UK as evidence of momentum. 

They include Andrew Rosindell, a Conservative MP for over two decades; Robert Jenrick, a former cabinet minister and former leadership contender; and Nadhim Zahawi, the former Conservative chancellor and party chair who was rejected for a peerage by his own party only weeks before his arrival in Reform. Each presentation was upbeat. The language was forgiving. The context was not discussed.

For years, Farage has insisted that the Conservative Party “broke Britain”. He has blamed it for unmanaged immigration, collapsing public services, economic stagnation, institutional decay and a general sense that nothing works anymore. This has been the central claim behind Reform’s appeal: that the Tories are exhausted, dishonest, and beyond repair.

So when senior Conservative figures defect in quick succession and are greeted not as contributors to failure but as political assets, the contradiction is direct. These are not marginal backbenchers. They include former ministers, a former chancellor, and MPs who spent years in a parliamentary majority voting through budgets, immigration policy, spending settlements and leadership decisions that Reform now claims ruined the country.

Farage’s defenders argue that this is politics, not theology — that building a serious parliamentary force requires experienced MPs, regardless of where they come from. That defence sits uneasily with a movement that has spent a decade insisting experience itself is the problem.

Reform’s brand depends on the claim of moral clarity — on the idea that it stands apart from the failures of the past. Every Conservative defector puts that claim under strain, not because the explanation is missing, but because the distinction itself collapses. No explanation has been offered because none resolves the contradiction.

The silence is doing the work. By refusing to confront the contradiction, Reform is betting that voters will focus on anger rather than memory. That “broken Britain” can remain a floating accusation, detached from the people who helped govern it.

What remains unanswered is why any of this is supposed to matter. These figures held office, shaped policy and exercised authority for years. Their record is not unknown. If their time in government did not demonstrate the judgement, competence or political courage required to prevent the failures now being denounced, it is unclear why a change of allegiance is meant to transform that record into an asset.

Reform is asking voters to believe that the problem was never performance, but party affiliation — that the same people, operating under a different logo, will somehow produce different outcomes.

This matters because Reform is no longer operating solely as a protest vehicle. Though polling experts caution that the figures reflect volatility rather than settled voter realignment, in recent polling, Reform has topped several national voting-intention polls. Farage talks openly about replacing the Conservatives as the dominant force on the right — a claim that depends on coherence rather than grievance alone.

Welcoming defectors without scrutiny suggests a party less interested in accountability than reinvention.

Farage has always been ruthless about defining enemies. Brussels. Westminster. The political class. What the past few weeks have shown is that those categories are flexible — expandable when numbers are needed, contractible when blame must be assigned.

You cannot build a political movement on the claim that Britain was wrecked by Conservative rule, then absorb the people who exercised that rule and expect the contradiction to go unanswered.

And if Reform cannot explain the difference between the Conservatives it condemns and the Conservatives it now relies on, voters may decide there isn’t one.
